Your straw market bag needs this Tiered Tassel in yummy colors of various greens and purples. You can make it yourself with the fabulous Pattiewack Tassel and Pompom Makers.
The Tiered Tassel is a combination of 3 tassels, a pompom and a vintage wooden spool, which is fun and easy, and quick to make.
I've had this bag since living in Santa Barbara several years ago, and I used it every weekend to shop at the farmer's market. And now I feel like I've got a brand NEW bag since I made this Tiered Tassel to tie onto the handle.
At the risk of sounding like a "Martha", I just have to say that the yarn you choose for your Tiered Tassel is everything. These yarns have been sitting on my shelf for a while, because I wanted to save them for something rich and organic to echo the earthiness of the yarn. I just love the colors and luxurious feeling they have. I think they match the bag perfectly. You will have to decide what YOUR style is, and how you want your Tiered Tassel to reflect that style, and to match your bag.
I did save the label on the dandelion yarn from a trip to Portland's Knit Purl shop. It's merino wool in the Forage line from Bumblebirch. Click here for more info.
Here's what you'll need for your Tiered Tassel:
3 Colors of Yarn
Wooden Spool or Large Bead
Large Upholstery Needle
Needle Threader
Scissors
Here's how to make your Tiered Tassel:
You'll make 3 different sizes of tassels and a pompom, then tie them together on a wooden spool. You can substitute a large bead for the spool if you don't have one. Let's start with the bottom 4-inch tassel.
Make a 4-inch Tassel:
1. Wind yarn around the 3rd step on the Pattiewack Tassel Maker 25 times.
2. Slip a 20-inch length of yarn under the loops and tie in a knot at the top of the tassel.
3. Insert a 14-inch length of yarn through the slit and tie around the neck of the tassel in a knot.
4. Cut the bottom loops of the tassel and slip off the tool at the end of the slit.
5. Trim the bottom of the tassel evenly. Set aside.
Make a 5-inch Tassel:
1. Wind yarn around the 4th step on the Pattiewack Tassel Maker 25 times.
2. Slip a 20-inch length of yarn under the loops and tie in a knot at the top of the tassel.
3. Insert a 15-inch length of yarn through the slit and tie around the neck of the tassel in a knot
4. Cut the bottom loops of the tassel and slip off the tool at the end of the slit. Trim the bottom of the tassel evenly. Set aside.
Make a 6-inch Tassel:
1. Wind yarn around the 5th step on the Pattiewack Tassel Maker 20 times.
5. Trim the bottom of the tassel evenly. Set aside.
Here's how to assemble the Tiered Tassel:
You'll need a large upholstery needle and a needle threader.
1. Thread the ends of the 4-inch tassel onto the needle with a needle threader.
2. Push the needle through the neck of the 5-inch tassel from the bottom, up through the top of the tassel. Pull the tassel down to cover the top of the bottom tassel.
3. Push the needle through the neck of the 6-inch tassel from the bottom, up through the top of the tassel. Pull the tassel down to cover the top of the center tassel.
4. Tie the yarns together at the top.
5. Thread the yarns onto the needle with the needle threader.
6. Then push the needle through the wooden spool. Set aside while you make a pompom.
Make a pompom for the top of the Tiered Tassel:
1. Wind yarn 20 times around the widest step on the Pattiewack Mini Pompom Maker to make a 2 1/2-inch pompom.
2. Tie a 10-inch length of yarn tightly around the center of the pompom.
3. Cut loops on both sides of the pompom and pull of the pompom maker.
4. Trim the pompom evenly into a ball.
5. Tie the pompom to the top of the wooden spool with the yarn coming out of the top of the spool, which will hold the tiered tassel together.
And you're done!! Now all you have to do is tie the Tiered Tassel to you bag. If you want a tiered tassel that you can switch to other bags, simply tie the tassel to a lobster hook or keychain finding.
I hope you love your Tiered Tassel and enjoyed making it with the Pattiewack Tassel and Pompom Makers!
